Types of Online MPH Program GRE Requirements
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is used by most universities that offer graduate-level programs. This examination tests students’ abilities in verbal reasoning, analytical writing, and quantitative reasoning. During the examination, students may be expected to exhibit their writing, mathematical, and critical thinking skills. The results of this examination can provide schools with a better idea of where students stand in terms of these standard educational skills.
The verbal and quantitative portions of the GRE are scored between 130–170 and the analytical writing section is scored between 0 and 6 in half-point increments. With verbal scores between 158-170, quantitative scores between 159-170, and the writing score of 4.5-6.0, students will be placed in a highly competitive place in admissions.
There are generally 3 types of online MPH programs in terms of GRE requirements.
- Universities that require GRE scores with no exceptions. These universities often state that students cannot enroll until test scores are received and do not offer substitutions or waivers during the process.
- Schools that offer GRE waivers, typically to students that have already completed a master’s or doctoral degree within the U.S or that have a certain amount of work-related experience within the field.
- Universities that do not include the GRE requirement within their admissions requirements. Schools that do not require the GRE may have stricter requirements for undergraduate GPA, work experience, or recommendations.
Why Consider an Online MPH without GRE Requirement?
Students that are interested in moving quickly into an online MPH program may benefit most from no-GRE online MPH programs for many reasons, such as:
- Saving time on preparation and transition
- Saving money on prep classes, tutoring, the exam, and transportation
- Less workload prior to the application

- Plenty of high-quality, accredited MPH programs in US

Frequently Asked Questions about GRE Requirements of Online MPH Programs
The biggest advantage of applying to MPH programs that don’t require GRE for admissions is that students don’t need to wait to apply till they receive their GRE scores. However, it doesn’t mean admission is easier. Students should demonstrate their competency and qualification in the other materials they submit, such as in their personal statement.
Determining which online MPH program is best is up to the student applying. It’s important to holistically evaluate the online MPH programs without the GRE requirement before deciding which ones are the best for them. Check the concentrations offered, students’ reviews on the online experience and school rankings.
If students don’t want to limit their MPH choices to no-GRE schools and have enough time to prepare for and take the tests, they could consider doing it to demonstrate their competence. If the deadlines are close, students might concentrate on other application materials.
It depends on the school, but generally applications won’t be reviewed until they are complete. It also includes other materials such as transcripts, recommendations and personal statements.
Courses in the MPH program require a significant quantitative workload, so the quantitative section of the GRE test may be more important. Schools evaluate applicants in many aspects, and standardized tests are not the only one.
