Epidemiologists study the causes, spread, and control of diseases and other public health concerns within populations. Their work can help guide prevention efforts and protect communities from widespread illness.

The outlook for public health careers in Louisiana varies by occupation. According to May 2024 BLS OEWS data, Louisiana employed about 100 epidemiologists, 60 statisticians, and 180 health information technologists and medical registrars. Nationally, BLS projects employment to grow 16% for epidemiologists, 8% for mathematicians and statisticians, and 15% for health information technologists and medical registrars from 2024 to 2034.
