Louisiana offers several CEPH-accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) programs for students interested in careers in epidemiology, community health, health policy, environmental health and disaster preparedness. MPH programs in the state are available through LSU Health New Orleans, LSU Shreveport/LSU Health Shreveport and Tulane University. In Louisiana, there are numerous concentrations available in CEPH-accredited MPH programs, including biostatistics, behavioral and community health sciences, generalist, epidemiology and other specialties. People who are currently working full-time positions or have other daily obligations may seek a more convenient route for pursuing their education such as online MPH programs, which also can be found throughout the state of Louisiana. 

A career in public health might be a good choice for students who want to make a difference in the lives of others. One area of public health that receives significant interest is epidemiology. Epidemiologists study the causes, spread, and control of diseases and other public health concerns within populations. Their work can help guide prevention efforts and protect communities from widespread illness.

The outlook for public health careers in Louisiana varies by occupation. According to May 2024 BLS OEWS data, Louisiana employed about 100 epidemiologists, 60 statisticians, and 180 health information technologists and medical registrars. Nationally, BLS projects employment to grow 16% for epidemiologists, 8% for mathematicians and statisticians, and 15% for health information technologists and medical registrars from 2024 to 2034. Location may also influence career opportunities, although the BLS does not publish parish-by-parish occupational outlook data for Louisiana.
